Rome Churches
Rome, of course, is the seat of the Catholic Church and the home of the
Vatican. As the birthplace of Catholicism the city is filled with cathedrals and holy sites. The Vatican itself, while not actually a part of the city of Rome, is an amazing destination in itself.
St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world is there. If you are only going to visit one church during your stay, that should be it. The Cathedral of Rome,
San Giovanni in Laterano is one of the most important sites in Christendom.
Here Constantine built the first Christian Church in the city.
St. Peter in Chains may not be religiously significant, but thousands flock to see Michelangelo's Moses which is displayed there.
Santa Maria Maggiore is said to be the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and should also be included on any tour of Rome's houses of worship. The
Pantheon was originally built in honor of all of the gods, but eventually it, too, was incorporated as a Catholic holy site.
