Forum Rome
Beginning as a few mud huts and a market in the marsh between the Palatine and Capitoline hills, the Roman Forum was established in the 6th century B.C. Over the next 900 years with subsequent developments provided by the generosity of the emperors, it became the commercial, political and religious center of ancient Rome until the 4th century AD. More than a marketplace, the Forum was the meeting place of Romans - from citizens to Caesars. The Forum became the symbol of the strength of Rome and the Republic.
The importance of the Forum declined along with the Roman Empire. Eventually the area was used to graze cattle and extensively plundered for its precious marbles. Today grand arches and partial walls provide a glimpse into the greatness that was once the Roman Empire. Admission to the area is free, but a guided tour or a map that superimposes the ancient forum over the scattered ruins is certainly worth the small investment.
