Cuisine of Rome
Like all major cities, Rome offers an abundance of excellent cuisine with influences from all over the world. It is possible to enjoy delicious dishes from all over the world, but this is the place to enjoy the rich flavor of Italian food as it was meant to be done. Restaurants open for lunch around 12:30, and for dinner at 8:00; although some that cater specifically to tourists do open earlier. Pizzerias are usually open only in the evenings.
Here are a few general guidelines to consider when looking for a restaurant. The best areas to look for good "Trattorie" are Trastevere and between
Piazza Navona and the Tevere. Generally speaking, you can do a little better than the restaurants near
Stazione Termini. The food is fine, but you can pay less elsewhere for the same quality.
The side streets around Piazza Navona and
Campo de' fiori harbor are filled with many good-quality, reasonably priced trattorie and pizzerie, and the areas of
San Lorenzo (near the university) and Testaccio (near the Piramide di Cestio mausoleum) are popular eating districts with the locals.
Trastevere offers an excellent selection of charming restaurants hidden in tiny piazzas, and pizzerias where you can enjoy a delicious meal at an outdoor table.
